INTRODUCTION

Laser ultrasonics is rapidly becoming a well-known industrial technique for inspecting composites that provides large benefits over conventional systems in the inspection of complex contoured carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) components (Osterkamp and Kaiser, 2008). The advantages of laser ultrasound over conventional systems for the inspection of complex shaped CFRP are multi-fold. Systems are typically able to rapidly scan the laser beam across the surface of the part with no knowledge of the part curvature, no special tooling or fixtures, and no contour following.

Eddy Current Tube Inspection, Crack Testing, Eddy Current Training and Certification Courses

Eddy-current testing uses electromagnetic induction to detect flaws in conductive materials. There are several limitations, among them: only conductive materials can be tested, the surface of the material must be accessible, the finish of the material may cause bad readings, the depth of penetration into the material is limited by the materials' conductivity, and flaws that lie parallel to the probe may be undetectable.

Aviation

Aircraft components are inspected before they are assembled into the aircraft and then they are periodically inspected throughout their useful life. Aircraft parts are designed to be as light as possible while still performing their intended function. This generally means that components carry very high loads relative to their material strength and small flaws can cause a component to fail. Since aircraft are cycled (loaded and unloaded) as they fly, land, taxi, and pressurize the cabin, many components are prone to fatigue cracking after some length of time. Even parts that are loaded well below the level that causes them to deform can develop fatigue cracks after being cycled for a long time.
